The ASTM A312 TP304L seamless stainless steel pipes produced by HAOMEI feature a low-carbon austenitic stainless steel grade and an integrally formed seamless structure. They are a popular choice for a wide range of marine fluid piping systems and are widely used in freshwater systems, fuel pipelines, ventilation and cooling lines, and other auxiliary piping applications on inland vessels and offshore service vessels.
ASTM A312 is a standard developed by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) for seamless, welded, and heavily cold-worked austenitic stainless steel pipes. It is intended for high-temperature service, corrosive media, and general industrial piping systems.
The standard covers austenitic stainless steel grades including:
TP304
TP304L
TP316
TP316L
TP321
And other austenitic stainless steel grades
304L is the low-carbon version of Type 304 stainless steel. Compared with standard 304, 304L has a lower carbon content, which helps reduce the risk of harmful carbide precipitation during welding. For this reason, it is particularly suitable for pipe fabrication projects involving welding operations.
ASTM A312 covers three main product forms:
Seamless pipe – manufactured through hot extrusion or hot piercing, followed by cold drawing and solution annealing where required;
Straight-seam welded pipe;
Heavily cold-worked pipe.
Among these products, seamless pipes are especially preferred in marine applications involving high pressure, vibration, and demanding reliability requirements because they eliminate the weld seam, which can be a potential weak point.
ASTM A312 seamless stainless steel pipes are generally available in nominal pipe sizes from NPS 1/8 to NPS 24 (approximately 10.3–610 mm outside diameter), with wall thicknesses ranging from SCH 5S to XXS.
All pipes are normally supplied in the solution-annealed condition. During solution annealing, the material is heated to approximately 1040–1120°C and then rapidly cooled to restore corrosion resistance and obtain a fully austenitic microstructure.

TP304L is a low-carbon austenitic stainless steel grade specified under ASTM A312. Its UNS designation is S30403.

1. Good General Corrosion Resistance
304L stainless steel relies on chromium to form a dense, passive oxide film on the metal surface. This protective film helps the material resist corrosion in atmospheric environments, humid conditions, freshwater, weak acids, certain organic media, and general industrial environments.
For internal ship piping, freshwater transportation, equipment connection pipes, and systems not exposed to high chloride concentrations, 304L generally provides reliable service performance.
Note: For direct and long-term exposure to seawater or highly chloride-containing media, Type 316L or duplex stainless steel may be a more suitable material choice, depending on operating conditions, temperature, flow rate, and project specifications.
2. Excellent Weldability
Marine piping installation often requires cutting, fit-up, welding, and on-site modification. The low carbon content of 304L reduces the risk of intergranular corrosion after welding. In many cases, complex post-weld heat treatment is not required, which simplifies fabrication and on-site installation.
When suitable filler materials, shielding gases, and qualified welding procedures are used, 304L pipes can provide stable and dependable welded joint performance.
3. Good Low-Temperature Toughness and Mechanical Strength
Austenitic stainless steel retains good toughness at low temperatures and is less prone to brittle fracture. This makes TP304L suitable for marine operating environments with significant temperature variations, as well as certain low-temperature media and cooling system pipelines.
4. Easy Fabrication and Forming
TP304L seamless stainless steel pipe has good cold-bending, flaring, flanging, and machining properties. It is suitable for complex marine piping installations where equipment spaces are limited and routing requirements are demanding.
For projects requiring pipe bending, reducer connections, flange fabrication, or customized prefabricated pipe spools, 304L provides excellent processing adaptability.
5. Smooth Flow Surface and High Cleanliness
Seamless stainless steel pipes have smooth internal surfaces and low flow resistance. This helps reduce scale formation and deposits on pipe walls. In freshwater, purified water, and many mildly corrosive chemical media, TP304L can maintain a high level of cleanliness.
It is therefore commonly used in shipboard domestic water systems and clean-fluid transfer applications.

ASTM A312 TP304L seamless stainless steel pipe is widely used in a variety of piping systems inside vessels and marine-related facilities.
Freshwater and Auxiliary Cooling Water Systems
Used for freshwater supply and auxiliary cooling-water pipelines for marine engines, generators, equipment cooling systems, and onboard machinery.
Fuel and Utility Piping
Suitable for selected fuel transfer, lubricating oil, compressed-air, and general utility piping applications where material compatibility and project specifications permit.
Shipboard Domestic Water Systems
Used in drinking water, sanitary water, washing water, and other onboard freshwater supply systems because of its clean surface and good corrosion resistance.
Ventilation and Cooling Lines
Suitable for ventilation-related piping, cooling circuits, and equipment connection lines in vessel engine rooms, machinery spaces, and auxiliary systems.
Inland and Nearshore Vessel Piping
Commonly used in freshwater or low-chloride service environments on inland river vessels, harbor craft, workboats, offshore support vessels, and other nearshore marine equipment.
For seawater cooling, ballast water, bilge water, firewater, or other systems with direct long-term exposure to seawater, material selection should be determined based on the applicable marine rules, corrosion allowance, fluid temperature, chloride level, flow velocity, and project requirements. In many such applications, 316L, 2205 duplex stainless steel, cupronickel, or other corrosion-resistant materials may be specified.
304 and 304L belong to the same family of austenitic stainless steels. The main difference is their carbon content.
304 Stainless Steel: Offers excellent overall performance and is widely used in industrial, architectural, and general piping applications.
304L Stainless Steel: A low-carbon version of 304 that is better suited to welded fabrication and piping systems requiring improved resistance to weld-related intergranular corrosion.
In shipbuilding and marine piping systems, if extensive welding is required and long-term corrosion stability in welded areas is an important consideration, TP304L is often the preferred option.
